Polycystic Kidney Disease

This is a disorder in which normal kidney tissue is replaced by cystic structures. It is an inherited condition and is seen more often in Persian and other long-haired breeds. The condition is often undiagnosed until renal failure develops or enlarged kidneys are noticed owing to an enlargement of the abdomen.

There are now DNA tests available for screening cats which carry the genes for PKD and elimination from breeding programs is recommended.

The diagnosis is made using ultrasound where it is easy to demonstrate multiple cystic structures in the kidneys. Normally both kidneys are effected and cysts can also be found in the liver.

The disease is progressive and effected animals will often die of renal failure. Treatment consists of treating the renal failure.
